The image of Savior is the central one in all Orthodox religious art. He is depicted as World Ruler and Arbiter of the world's destiny. He is painted with His right hand raised in blessing and His left hand holding a book, the symbol of the Gospel.
The Holy Virgin is a strict and solemn image of the Mother of God with the Son on Her lap. The Virgin raises Her hand as if in a prayer and Her Holy Son is blessing Her. This icon is distinctive in its strictness, unlike other icons showing the Mother of God. The images of the Mother and Her Child are noble and exalted, presenting King and Queen enthroned.
Everyone knows the image of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker as he is one of the most revered saints around the world. St. Nicholas helps travelers and is often asked about a happy marriage. In his lifetime, the saint helped avoid accidental death, pacified enemies, protected wrongfully convicted. The icon helps recover from an illness, maintain wealth and peace in the family, protects children. The saint is worshipped to avoid poverty and hardships.
